Sports Thoughts This Morning
It’s been a while since my last post, so for that I apologize. Guess I underestimated how a full time day job, where you cannot check anything personal on your computer (which means ESPN.com in my case), can seriously cramp your style.
Long story short, I am going to make a concerted effort to blog regularly in the future.
We sure missed a lot since the my last blog during the NFL Draft. Lets recap exactly what we missed:
- the entire NBA Playoffs
- the last three rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs
- half the MLB season
- the Masters and the U.S. Open in golf
- Wimbledon and the French Open
That’s nearly half the sports fan season. What a terrible doctor I’ve been!
Now we can’t change the past, so let’s look to the present in the sports world:
- Tom Watson has the early lead in the clubhouse at the British Open. You have got to be kidding me. The world’s best golfers are all in the same place and the early leader — Watson — has an AARP subscription. That reminds me, does anyone else below the age of 25 get sent copies of AARP in the mail like I do? While I’m sure it’s a good business practice to hook us while we’re young, I am about 40 years from the retirement age. Just saying…
- Why do they tape the ESPY Awards on a Wednesday and broadcast it on Sunday? Are the ESPYs too racy for live TV or what? Last night would’ve been the perfect night to broadcast it. THERE WERE NO SPORTS ON TV!!!
- The Phillies signed Pedro Martinez yesterday. While I’ll admit his signing has made me cautiously optimistic (he did hit 93 mph on the radar gun and a healthy Pedro would be a superb third or fourth starter), I really wish we were saying this in 1999 or 2000. A trade for Roy Halladay on the other hand…
I’d like to stay and chat some more but I’m running late for work. Enjoy the return of MLB games and early round play at the British Open.
